Title and meta description length limits
Google truncates snippets by width in pixels, not by characters. Wide letters (W, M) use more space than narrow ones (i, l), so two 60-character titles can display differently. The usual targets are:
- Title tag: about 600 pixels, which is roughly 50–60 characters.
- Meta description: about 920 pixels on desktop and about 680 on mobile, which is roughly 120–155 characters.
How to write a title tag that earns clicks
- Lead with the primary keyword, then the benefit or differentiator.
- Make every page's title unique and accurate to the page.
- Keep the brand name at the end, where truncation costs least.
How to write a meta description that earns clicks
- Answer "what will I get?" in the first sentence.
- Reuse the words searchers used, since Google bolds matches.
- Add a specific detail (a number, a price, a result) and avoid filler.
