What is AI visibility, and how do you measure it?
By ElixRank Team · Updated
Short answer
AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews mention or cite your brand when people ask questions in your market. You measure it by running a fixed set of prompts on a schedule and tracking mention rate, citation rate, position, sentiment and AI referral traffic.
AI visibility in plain terms
In classic SEO, visibility means ranking: your page appears in a list of results. In AI search there's often no list. The assistant writes one answer and may name a few brands or link a few sources. AI visibility is whether you're in that answer.
Two kinds of presence matter, and they're not the same:
- Mention: the answer names your brand or product, with or without a link ("Tools like X and Y can…").
- Citation: the answer links your page as a source. Citations send traffic; mentions build recognition and trust.
How engines pick what to mention and cite is covered in how AI search chooses sources.
The 5 AI visibility metrics that matter
| Metric | What it means | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | % of tracked prompts where your brand is named | Run your prompt set; count answers that name you |
| Citation rate | % of prompts where your site is linked as a source | Same prompt set; count answers linking your domain. For Google, use the AI Overview checker |
| Share of voice | Your mentions ÷ all brand mentions across the prompt set | Count competitor mentions in the same answers |
| Position and sentiment | Whether you're named first or last, recommended or caveated | Note rank order and tone for each mention |
| AI referral traffic | Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and similar | GA4 → Traffic acquisition, filter session source |
How to measure AI visibility for free
- Write 20–50 prompts your customers would actually ask: category questions ("best X for Y"), problem questions ("how do I fix Z") and comparisons ("X vs Y"). Pull ideas from your Search Console queries.
- Pick the engines that matter for your audience. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews are a good default.
- Run every prompt in a logged-out or fresh session, the same day each month, and record: mentioned (yes/no), cited (yes/no), position, competitors named.
- For Google, check AI Overview citations with the AI Overview checker.
- In GA4, create an exploration or segment for AI referrers and track sessions and conversions monthly.
- Put the rates in a simple monthly report (template below) and compare month to month.
Paid AI visibility tools automate steps 3–4 across hundreds of prompts and engines. They're worth it once manual tracking becomes a chore, not before you know which prompts matter.
A simple AI visibility report template
| Section | Contents |
|---|---|
| Headline numbers | Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice and AI referral sessions, with change vs last month |
| By engine | The same four numbers for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews |
| By prompt group | Category, problem and comparison prompts: where you're strong and where you're absent |
| Competitors | Who's named most often where you're missing, and which of their pages are cited |
| Actions | Pages to update or create, and where to earn mentions (reviews, communities, YouTube) |
How to improve AI visibility
- Let AI search crawlers in. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot with the robots.txt tester.
- Answer questions directly. Put a short, quotable answer at the top of each page, as shown in how to get cited by ChatGPT.
- Publish facts others don't have: original data, prices, tested steps. Engines cite the source of a specific fact.
- Get mentioned where engines look: reviews, comparison articles, Reddit threads and YouTube videos.
- Keep key pages fresh and dated. Stale pages lose citations to newer ones.
The strategy behind this is generative engine optimization. How it differs from classic SEO is covered in GEO vs SEO.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI visibility?
How often and how favourably AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your brand for questions in your market.
How is AI visibility different from SEO rankings?
Rankings are positions in a list of links. AI visibility is whether you're named or cited inside a generated answer, which often has no list and may not link anyone. Strong rankings help, but they don't guarantee citations.
Can Google Search Console measure AI visibility?
Only partly. AI Overview clicks and impressions are included in Search Console's web search totals, but not separated, and Search Console can't see ChatGPT or Perplexity at all.
How do I track traffic from ChatGPT?
In GA4, look for sessions with source chatgpt.com (and perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com). Some AI visits arrive without a referrer and show as direct, so this undercounts.
Do I need an AI visibility tool?
Not to start. A monthly manual run of 20–50 prompts plus GA4 referral data is enough to see trends. Tools help once you track hundreds of prompts or several brands.
