Search intent explained: the four types and how to match them
By ElixRank Team · Updated
Short answer
Search intent is the goal behind a query. The four common types are informational (learn), navigational (find a site), commercial investigation (compare options) and transactional (act or buy). A page ranks best when its type matches what the search results already show for that query.
The four types of intent
- Informational: 'how to improve CTR'. The searcher wants an answer or explanation.
- Navigational: 'elixrank login'. The searcher wants a specific site.
- Commercial investigation: 'best AI SEO tool'. The searcher is comparing before choosing.
- Transactional: 'buy SEO tool', 'pricing'. The searcher is ready to act.
Queries can mix intents, and the boundaries aren't strict. Treat the categories as a way to think, not a rigid filter.
Read intent from the live results
Don't guess. Google has already learned what people want and shows it. Search the query and look at what ranks:
- All guides and how-tos: informational. A product page will struggle.
- Listicles and comparisons: commercial. Write a comparison, not a sales page.
- Product, pricing and category pages: transactional.
- Maps, shopping boxes or video carousels: the format matters as much as the page type.
Match your page to the intent
- List the 5 to 10 top results and note their page type, length and headings.
- Choose the same type unless you have a clear reason to differ.
- Answer the query directly near the top.
- Cover the subtopics the top pages share, then add what they miss.
- Use a title that signals the type: guide, checklist, comparison, pricing.
Use Search Console to spot mismatches
Pages with high impressions but low CTR, or positions that never improve, often have an intent mismatch. Check which query the page ranks for and compare it with what the page actually is. See how to read Search Console metrics.
When two of your pages target the same query with different intents, they may compete. That case is covered in keyword cannibalization.
