What the AI Overview checker tells you
- Whether an AI Overview appears for the keyword in the country you choose.
- Every cited source, in the order Google lists them, with your domain highlighted (subdomains count).
- Your organic position in the top 20, so you can see the gap between ranking and being cited.
- How many sources also rank in the top 10. A low number means Google is reaching past page one for answers, which is your opening.
What we found checking 37 SEO queries
On 10 October 2026 we pulled live US Google results for 37 commercial and informational SEO queries, such as “ahrefs pricing”, “geo audit” and “seo roi calculator”. It's a small sample from one niche, so read it as a direction, not a law:
- 36 of 37 queries showed an AI Overview. In marketing and software topics, assume there is one.
- Overviews with listed sources cited 8.7 sources on average.
- Only 34% of cited sources also ranked in the organic top 10 for the same query. Two-thirds came from further down or from outside the results.
- YouTube was cited in 21 of 32 overviews with sources, and Reddit in 8. Video and forum answers are a real route into AI Overviews.
The practical reading: you don't need to rank first to be cited, but you do need a passage that answers the query better than the other candidates.
How to get cited when you're not
1. Answer the exact query in the first lines
Put a two- to three-sentence answer to the query directly under the H1 or the matching H2. Write it so it makes sense quoted alone, without “as mentioned above”.
2. Add something the other sources don't have
A number, a dated price, a table or a tested step. Overviews draw facts from the sources that state them clearly, so a specific, verifiable fact beats a general explanation.
3. Make the page easy to read for crawlers
The answer must be in the HTML, not loaded later by JavaScript, and Googlebot must be allowed in robots.txt. Check with the robots.txt tester and the meta tags analyzer (look for noindex and nosnippet).
4. Cover the follow-up questions
Overviews often combine the main answer with two or three follow-ups. Use question-style H2s for the obvious next questions, each with its own short answer.
The full playbook is in how to rank in Google AI Overviews, and the background in how AI search chooses sources.
Why Search Console can't answer this
Google counts AI Overview clicks and impressions inside the normal Performance report, with no filter for them. If impressions rise while clicks fall for a query, an AI Overview is a likely cause, and this checker confirms it. To find those queries quickly, export them from Search Console or connect it to ElixRank. Then check the ones with the biggest drop in click-through rate.
