Where FAQ rich results still appear

In August 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health sites. For everyone else, FAQPage markup is still valid structured data, but Google won’t show the expandable questions under your result. Treat this tool as a way to produce clean, valid markup, not as a shortcut to extra space in the results.

Why add FAQ markup anyway

FAQ schema rules to follow

After adding it, run the page through the schema markup validator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add FAQ schema to my page?

Fill in your questions and answers, copy the generated code and paste it into the page's HTML, usually in the head or just before the closing body tag. Most CMSs have a field or plugin for custom code. Then check it with a schema validator.

Will FAQ schema give me a rich result in Google?

Probably not. Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For other sites the markup is valid but won't produce the expandable FAQ result.

Is FAQ schema still worth adding?

It can be. It clearly labels questions and answers for search engines and AI systems, and other search engines may use it. Just don't expect a visual rich result in Google, and only add it when the Q&A is visible on the page.

Do the questions have to be visible on the page?

Yes. Google's guidelines require the full question and answer text to be visible to users on the page. Don't mark up content that's hidden or doesn't exist.

Can answers include links or formatting?

Yes. Answers can include a limited set of HTML tags, such as links, lists, paragraphs, bold and italics.

FAQPage or QAPage?

Use FAQPage when you wrote both the questions and the answers. Use QAPage for a single question with answers from users, like a forum thread.
